Aronbor Revisited by Ramah-Palmer Aronbor Revisited by Ramah-Palmer
A new version of the Aronbor map that I did to get me back into the swing of things after a hiatus.

Done completely in Photoshop using a Wacom Bamboo tablet.

Edit: Re-uploaded the image with a smaller version to keep the file size down. Should be viewable bigger now though. I think.

Simply stunning! I love the way you did the mountains- by far some of my favorite illustrated mountain that I've seen in a long time.

Did you draw all those tiny trees as well? O.O

I created about a dozen or so tree brushes and then stamped them all on individually. Apart from The Ruhks which I created some bigger brushes that I created from the tree brushes and fit together like a jigsaw. :)

Love the mountains Ramah, and the city markers are definitely an enhancement to the style. Interesting how you made the Ruhks more blurry and misty, which enhances their forbidding appearance. My personal jury is out on the sepia approach. It's hard for me to judge how much of the apparent change is a function of the color scheme and how much a function of the fact that you've distressed this one more than usual. Either way, I really like it.

Cheers, Immo. Good to have some feedback. :)
The only reason I changed the mistiness of the Ruhks is that I stupidly seem to have lost the original mask for that layer. So I had to make a new one which I was never gonna get exactly the same as before.
As to the distressing, this is actually a lot less distressed than the previous version. Well, in the fact that most of the layers of grunge I had on it before I didn't use this time. No crumples or stains. Most of the look of this version comes from Coyote's excellent paper textures, which I didn't have when I did the original.
I actually, really like the colours on this new version. I knew it wouldn't be to everyone's liking but when I look at the original now it just seems so drab. Hehe.

How did you do the mountains for your map?

Just drew the outlines on one layer, rough shading on another layer and then even rougher shadows on a final layer. All done in a dark brown colour, as can be seen better on the first version of the Aronbor map. Then I just played around with the blend modes which gives some nice effects over my paper texture.

Depends on which type of map you want to talk about. But you mix realistic looking landmass, colors and landmarks (trees, etc) all together. :)

Great job.
